Tic Tac Toe
Get three in a row to win!
About Tic Tac Toe
Tic Tac Toe is one of the oldest games in the world — a version called Terni Lapilli was played in the Roman Empire, and the game later spread through Britain as "noughts and crosses" before becoming a pencil-and-paper staple everywhere. Its rules fit in one sentence, yet underneath them sits real strategy: forks, traps and forced draws that players have studied for centuries.
This version gives you two ways to play. Against the computer you face a perfect minimax AI that evaluates every possible continuation of the game — it literally cannot be beaten, so a hard-earned draw against it is a genuine achievement and winning is impossible by design. Switch to 2 Players mode and the same board becomes a hotseat duel on one device. A running scoreboard tallies X wins, O wins and draws across as many rounds as you like, the winning line is highlighted when a round ends, and X always moves first.
How to Play Tic Tac Toe
Choose your mode at the top: "vs AI" to play as X against the computer, or "2 Players" to share the board with a friend.
Player X always goes first. Click or tap any empty square to place your symbol.
In vs AI mode the computer answers immediately with its O; in 2 Players mode, hand the turn to the other player after each move.
The first side to complete a line of three — across, down or diagonally — wins the round and the winning line lights up.
If all nine squares fill without a line, the round is a draw. Press New Game for the next round, or Reset Scores to zero the tally.

Tips & Tricks
- 💡Against the AI, accept that winning is impossible — play for the draw by taking the centre or a corner first and blocking every threat immediately.
- 💡The fork is the decisive weapon against humans: build two separate lines that each need one more square, and your opponent can only block one.
- 💡If your opponent opens in a corner in 2 Players mode, take the centre — it is the only reply that guarantees at least a draw.
- 💡When the AI opens, watch the opposite corner: many drawn games are saved by occupying the corner diagonally opposite the AI's marks.
Tic Tac Toe — Frequently Asked Questions
Can the computer be beaten in vs AI mode?+
No — the AI uses a full minimax search and always finds the optimal move, so the best possible result against it is a draw. That makes it a perfect training partner: if you can draw consistently, your defence is flawless.
Does Tic Tac Toe support two players?+
Yes. The 2 Players mode is a hotseat game on a single device or screen: one player is X, the other is O, and you take turns clicking squares. The scoreboard labels change to Player X and Player O.
Who moves first, and does it matter?+
X always moves first, which is a real advantage — with perfect play from both sides the game is a draw, but X gets to dictate the opening. The scoreboard keeps the long-term tally fair across many rounds.
Do the scores save between visits?+
No, the X, draw and O tallies are kept only for the current session and reset when you reload the page or press Reset Scores.
