About Battleship

Battleship started as a pencil-and-paper game played by soldiers in the First World War era and became a household classic as a plastic board game and later an early electronic game. This version puts you in command of a five-ship fleet on a 10Γ—10 ocean: the Carrier (5 cells), Battleship (4), Cruiser (3), Submarine (3) and Destroyer (2) β€” seventeen cells of shipping to hide, and seventeen enemy cells to find on the mirrored enemy board.

Placement is a real decision, not a formality. You position each ship yourself, horizontally or vertically, spread them out or cluster them, hug the edges or own the middle β€” or hit Auto-place and accept a random legal layout. Once the battle starts, every shot is a deduction problem: a miss rules out water, a hit demands follow-up shots along the ship's line, and sinking a ship clears a whole region of suspicion from the board.

The computer plays the same game back at you with a memory. It hunts randomly until it scores a hit, then queues up the neighbouring cells and works around the wound until the ship sinks. That makes the second half of every match tense: once the computer smells a ship it is methodical, so the race is genuinely about who reads the board better. There is no score beyond the result and the running sunk-ship tallies β€” sinking all five enemy ships before yours go down is the whole prize.

How to Play Battleship

1

Place your fleet on your board: the game prompts you ship by ship (Carrier first, then Battleship, Cruiser, Submarine, Destroyer). Click a cell to anchor the current ship, and use the orientation toggle to switch it between horizontal and vertical.

2

Short on patience? Press Auto-place for a random legal fleet, or Clear to start placement over. The fleet list on screen shows which ships are placed and which is next.

3

Press Start Battle. The computer's five ships are hidden in the enemy waters on the other board.

4

Click a cell on the enemy board to fire. A hit marker shows a strike, a dot shows a miss, and when every cell of a ship is hit it is revealed as sunk and announced.

5

After each of your shots, the computer fires back at your board. It remembers its hits and probes around them until it finishes the ship off.

6

Sink all five enemy ships before the computer sinks your five to win the game.

Tips & Tricks

  • πŸ’‘Fire in a checkerboard pattern. Every ship is at least two cells long, so every ship must cover at least one cell of a single colour on a chessboard pattern β€” probing only those cells halves the ocean you need to search.
  • πŸ’‘When a shot hits, probe the four neighbours to find the ship's axis, then walk along that line in both directions until the ship sinks. Resist firing elsewhere mid-kill; an unfinished ship is information thrown away.
  • πŸ’‘Spread your own fleet out and avoid the edges and corners β€” human and computer hunters both tend to check predictable spots, and clustered ships can be found by one lucky search pattern.
  • πŸ’‘Keep a mental map of sunk ships' lengths. Knowing the enemy has only the 2-cell Destroyer left changes how tightly you need to space your hunting shots.

Battleship β€” Frequently Asked Questions

What ships are in each fleet?+

Five ships totalling 17 cells: a Carrier (5), a Battleship (4), a Cruiser (3), a Submarine (3) and a Destroyer (2). Both you and the computer command the identical fleet.

How does the computer choose its shots?+

It hunts across your board until it lands a hit, then it remembers that hit and systematically probes the surrounding cells until the ship is sunk β€” much like a careful human player. It does not peek at your layout.

Can ships touch each other or sit diagonally?+

Ships cannot overlap, but they are allowed to sit adjacent, including diagonally. That is exactly why spreading your fleet out is a choice with trade-offs rather than a rule.

Does Battleship work on mobile?+

Yes β€” placement, orientation and firing are all click-or-tap based. The 10Γ—10 boards are compact on a small phone screen, so tap carefully when placing long ships near the edges.
