About Word Guess

Word Guess is the five-letter deduction game in the tradition of the code-breaking board game Mastermind and the TV show Lingo, which the world fell for all over again when the browser version went viral in 2022. Six guesses, three colours of feedback, and a hidden word — the entire game is an exercise in extracting maximum information from every attempt.

Each game picks a secret word from a built-in list of roughly 190 common five-letter words, and — importantly — your guesses are validated against that same list, so every guess must be a real word the game knows. Feedback handles duplicate letters exactly as it should: greens are marked first, then yellows are granted only while unaccounted copies of that letter remain in the answer, so a grey second "E" correctly tells you the word holds just one. The on-screen keyboard recolours itself as evidence accumulates, and the answer is revealed whether you solve it in two or run out of tries at six.

How to Play Word Guess

1

Type a five-letter word using your physical keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press Enter to submit it.

2

The row is coloured: green means the letter is in the word and in the correct position; amber means the letter is in the word but in a different position; grey means that letter is not in the word (beyond any copies already accounted for).

3

The on-screen keyboard updates with the best-known state of every letter, so use it as your evidence board.

4

If your entry is not five letters, or not a word in the game's list, it is rejected with a message and does not cost a guess.

5

Solve the word within 6 guesses to win. Either way the answer is revealed at the end, and New Word deals a fresh puzzle.

Tips & Tricks

  • 💡Open with a vowel-mapping word. AUDIO or ADIEU tests four vowels at once; follow with a consonant-heavy word like STERN or CLAMP to survey the common consonants before you start committing to candidates.
  • 💡Track duplicates carefully: if you guessed SPEED and the first E went amber while the second went grey, the answer contains exactly one E — do not waste later guesses testing two-E words.
  • 💡From guess three onwards, play only words that could be the answer given everything you know, unless you are truly stuck; information-only guesses stop paying once the field is narrow.
  • 💡Position your yellows: an amber letter must move, so mentally list its legal homes (excluding both its guessed spot and any green-locked conflicts) before choosing the next word.

Word Guess — Frequently Asked Questions

Which words can I guess?+

Guesses must come from the game's built-in list of roughly 190 common five-letter English words — the same list the answer is drawn from. Obscure or pluralised rarities may be rejected with "not in our word list", which never costs you a guess.

How are double letters handled?+

Correctly and strictly, in two passes: exact-position greens consume their letters first, then ambers are awarded only while copies of that letter remain unaccounted for in the answer. A grey duplicate therefore genuinely means "no more of this letter".

What is a strong opening word?+

Any word testing A, E and two or three of S, T, R, N, L does well — CRANE, SLATE and AUDIO are all fine openers. Two complementary openers (one vowel-rich, one consonant-rich) map most of the board by guess three.

Is there a daily puzzle or streak tracking?+

No — every New Word is a fresh random puzzle, unlimited and untimed. Your challenge is simply your personal solve rate within six guesses.
