Lights Out
Press a light to flip it and its neighbours. Turn them all off.
Tap a light to toggle it and its up/down/left/right neighbours. Turn every light off to win.
Every puzzle here is generated by random presses from a solved board, so a solution always exists.
About Lights Out
Lights Out began life as a handheld electronic puzzle in the 1990s and became a favourite of mathematicians because such a simple rule hides real depth. The board is a grid of lights, some glowing and some dark. Pressing any light toggles it — and also flips its neighbours above, below, left and right. Every press changes up to five lights at once, which means the obvious move, pressing a lit light to switch it off, usually switches two others back on.
This version offers three grid sizes: 4×4 to learn the rules, the classic 5×5, and a 6×6 board that will test anyone. Every puzzle is generated by making random presses on an already-solved board, which guarantees a solution always exists — you will never be handed an impossible grid. Your only score is your move count, shown as you play, so a solved board invites an immediate rematch: can you do it in fewer presses?
Under the friendly surface sits genuine linear algebra — players and textbooks have analysed Lights Out for decades. The practical consequence is the famous light-chasing method described in the tips: solve the board row by row and let the last row tell you how the first row should have gone. Once that idea clicks, even the 6×6 board becomes a satisfying, methodical solve rather than a scramble.
How to Play Lights Out
Choose a grid size — 4×4, 5×5 or 6×6. A pattern of glowing yellow lights appears; your job is to turn every single light off.
Click or tap any light to toggle it together with its immediate up, down, left and right neighbours. Corner lights affect three lights, edge lights four, and centre lights five.
Watch the whole pattern, not just the light you pressed: every press is a trade, fixing some lights while disturbing others.
Use the live counter of lit lights to judge progress, and your move count to judge elegance — both are tracked as you play.
Keep pressing until all lights are dark. The board congratulates you with your total move count.
Press New Puzzle at any time for a fresh pattern, or switch grid size for a harder or gentler game. Every generated puzzle is guaranteed solvable.

Tips & Tricks
- 💡Chase the lights: work from the top row down, pressing the light directly below any lit light in the row above. This pushes all the light down to the bottom row, where the endgame can be read clearly.
- 💡Pressing the same light twice cancels out exactly, so the order of your presses never matters — only which lights you press an odd number of times. Think in sets, not sequences.
- 💡If light-chasing leaves you with an unsolvable-looking bottom row, the fix is in your first row: change which first-row lights you pressed before starting the chase, then chase again.
- 💡On the 4×4 board, experiment freely to build intuition for how a press ripples; that feel for the pattern transfers directly to the bigger grids.
Lights Out — Frequently Asked Questions
Is every Lights Out puzzle really solvable?+
Yes, in this version. Each board is created by making random presses on a fully solved (all-off) board, and since pressing the same combination again would undo it, a solution is guaranteed by construction.
What is a good move count?+
On the 5×5 board, first solves often take 25 or more presses; the light-chasing method plus a little practice brings that down toward the teens. The 4×4 board can fall in single figures, while 6×6 rewards patience over speed.
Does the order of presses matter?+
No — this is one of the puzzle's elegant properties. Toggling is its own inverse and presses commute, so only the set of lights pressed an odd number of times determines the final board. If you are stuck, you never made a 'wrong move' permanently; you can always press a light again to undo it.
Can I play on a phone?+
Yes. Lights are large tap targets on all three grid sizes and there is no timer, so it suits touch play well. The 4×4 board is the most comfortable on small screens.
