About Chess Puzzles
Chess Puzzles is a focused tactics trainer built around one skill: spotting checkmate. All twelve positions are real forced mates — eight mate-in-1 finishes and four mate-in-2 combinations — covering the patterns every improving player must know cold: back-rank mates, the smothered mate, the Arabian mate, queen-and-knight corner mates, and rook deflections where a queen sacrifice drags a defender away from the back rank. Every position was verified with the game's own move generator, and the mate-in-2 puzzles are sound against every legal defence, not just the scripted reply.
Moves are fully legal: a built-in chess engine generates every pseudo-legal move for the pieces on the board and filters out anything that leaves your king in check, so you can explore a position exactly as you would over the board. Wrong tries are not punished with a lost game — the piece simply snaps back and 25 points come off that puzzle's value, which rewards careful calculation over guessing. A streak counter and a running score turn the set of twelve into a single training session you can replay in shuffled order.
How to Play Chess Puzzles
You play White in every puzzle; the badge shows whether it is mate in 1 or mate in 2.
Click one of your pieces to highlight all of its legal moves, then click a highlighted square to move — or simply drag the piece.
If the move is legal but is not the mating move, it counts as a wrong try (−25 points) and the piece returns so you can think again.
In a mate-in-2 puzzle, Black answers your correct first move with its best defence; deliver the final checkmate to finish.
Stuck? The Hint button highlights the piece that mates, at a cost of 30 points.
Solve all 12 puzzles to see your final score, then replay them shuffled.

Tips & Tricks
- 💡Check every checking move first — in mate puzzles the key is usually a check or a sacrifice that forces the reply.
- 💡Count the king's flight squares before you move: a mate exists when all of them are covered, so find the move that covers the last one.
- 💡In mate-in-2 positions, work out Black's only legal replies to your candidate key move; if any reply survives, the key is wrong.
- 💡Smothered mates happen when the king is trapped by its own pieces — look for a knight landing next to a boxed-in king.
Chess Puzzles — Frequently Asked Questions
Are the moves in Chess Puzzles fully legal?+
Yes. The game contains a compact chess engine that generates moves for every piece and rejects any move that leaves your own king in check. The curated positions declare no castling or en-passant rights, so those two special moves never arise; pawn promotion (not needed in these twelve) is handled as promotion to queen.
How is the score calculated?+
A mate-in-1 is worth 100 points and a mate-in-2 is worth 200. Each wrong try on a puzzle subtracts 25 points and each hint subtracts 30, with a minimum of 20 points for solving. Your streak counts puzzles solved back-to-back without a wrong try resetting it.
What happens when I make a wrong move?+
Nothing irreversible: the move is rejected, the piece stays where it was, and you lose 25 points from that puzzle's value. This lets you test ideas and learn why they fail instead of losing the puzzle outright.
Are these positions from real games?+
They are classic training positions built around famous mating patterns — back-rank mates, a smothered mate, an Arabian mate, rook deflections and an opera-game-style queen sacrifice. Each one was machine-verified: the mate-in-2 keys were checked against every legal defence.
