Square roots, cube roots, nth roots and perfect square checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you simplify a square root?
Factor the number and pull out pairs: √72 = √(36 x 2) = 6√2, because 36 is a perfect square whose root, 6, moves outside the radical. Whatever cannot pair up stays inside.
What is the difference between square root and nth root?
The square root asks what number times itself gives x. The nth root generalises it: the 4th root of 81 is 3 because 3 raised to the 4th power is 81.
Why can square roots be irrational?
Unless a number is a perfect square, its square root cannot be written as an exact fraction: √2 is about 1.41421356 and its decimal expansion never ends or repeats.
Is the Square Root Calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. It is completely free and every calculation runs locally in your browser, so the numbers and dates you enter are never uploaded, stored, or shared with anyone.
