What is a sitemap and why do I need one?
A sitemap lists every URL you want search engines to find, with hints about update frequency and importance. It does not guarantee indexing, but it helps crawlers discover deep or new pages faster — especially on large or brand-new sites.
Where do I put the sitemap.xml file?
Upload it to your site's root so it lives at https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml, add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt, and submit the URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
What do changefreq and priority actually do?
They are hints, not commands. Priority (0.0–1.0) tells crawlers which of your pages matter most relative to each other; changefreq estimates how often a page changes. Google largely ignores both if they look inaccurate, and lastmod is the signal it trusts most when it is honest.
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
The protocol limit is 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. Larger sites use a sitemap index file pointing at several sitemaps — paste URLs in batches here if you are near the limit.
