Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Nano ID?
Nano ID is a tiny, secure, URL-friendly unique ID format popularised by the nanoid JavaScript library. The default is 21 characters from a 64-symbol alphabet.
How secure is the randomness?
IDs are generated with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographically secure random source, with rejection sampling so every character is equally likely.
Nano ID vs UUID — which should I use?
A 21-character Nano ID has similar collision resistance to a UUID (about 126 bits vs 122 bits) in nearly half the length, which makes URLs and database indexes smaller.
Can I change the alphabet?
Yes. Restrict it to numbers only for numeric codes, or use the hex alphabet for IDs that resemble hashes. Shorter alphabets need longer IDs for the same uniqueness.
