About Number Guessing
Number Guessing is the purest form of a search problem disguised as a parlour game: one hidden number, a stream of clues, and your job is to corner it with as few questions as possible. It is also a gentle introduction to one of computing's most important ideas — binary search — because the winning strategy is exactly the algorithm computers use to search sorted data.
This version is richer than the usual higher/lower game. You choose the hunting ground — 1–50, 1–100, 1–200 or 1–500 — and you have exactly 10 guesses to find the number. Every guess returns a temperature reading as well as a direction: within 5 is Very Hot, within 15 is Hot, within 30 is Warm, and beyond that you are Cold, always paired with "higher" or "lower". A full history of your guesses and their readings builds beneath the input, and re-entering a number you already tried is politely ignored rather than wasting a guess.
How to Play Number Guessing
Choose a range at the top: 1–50 to learn, 1–100 for the classic game, or 1–200 and 1–500 for a real hunt. A secret number is picked inside it.
Type a guess in the box and press Enter or the Guess button. You have 10 guesses in total, shown as a countdown.
Read the feedback: a temperature (Cold, Warm, Hot or Very Hot) tells you how close you are, and the arrow of the hint tells you whether the secret is higher or lower.
Combine the two signals — direction halves the range, temperature tells you which end of what is left to probe — and guess again.
Find the number within 10 guesses to win, with your guess count announced. Run out and the game reveals the number and offers Play Again.

Tips & Tricks
- 💡Open at the midpoint — 50 in the 1–100 game — then always halve what remains. Pure binary search finds any number in the 1–100 range within 7 guesses, comfortably inside your 10.
- 💡Use temperature to break the halving routine intelligently: a "Very Hot — Go Lower" reading means the answer sits within 5 below your guess, so probe 2 or 3 down, not halfway.
- 💡For the 1–500 range you need near-perfect halving (it takes up to 9 guesses), so waste nothing: never guess a number the temperature bands have already ruled out.
- 💡Track your known bounds from the history list rather than memory — the band edges (5, 15, 30 away) are easy to misjudge late in the game.
Number Guessing — Frequently Asked Questions
How many guesses do I get?+
Exactly 10, in every range. That is generous for 1–50 (binary search needs at most 6) and genuinely tight for 1–500 (up to 9), which is why the bigger ranges are the expert game.
What do the temperature hints mean exactly?+
They measure the distance between your guess and the secret: 5 or less is Very Hot, 6–15 is Hot, 16–30 is Warm, and more than 30 is Cold. Each hint also says whether the secret is higher or lower than your guess.
What happens if I guess the same number twice?+
Nothing — the duplicate is ignored and does not consume one of your 10 guesses. Guesses outside the chosen range are rejected the same way.
Is there a strategy that always wins?+
Yes: binary search. Always guess the middle of the range still possible and the worst case is 6 guesses for 1–50, 7 for 1–100, 8 for 1–200 and 9 for 1–500 — always inside the limit.
