How to Create a Strong Password (And Actually Remember It)

Most account hacks do not involve genius hackers — they involve passwords like "summer2024" being guessed or reused from an old data leak. The good news: a strong password strategy is simple, and you only have to remember one or two passwords yourself.

How to Create a Strong Password (And Actually Remember It)

Length beats complexity

A password’s strength comes mostly from its length. Four random words strung together — like "correct horse battery staple" — are far stronger than a short tangle like "P@ssw0rd!", and much easier to remember. Aim for 16+ characters wherever a site allows it.

Never reuse, ever

When one site leaks its database, attackers try those same email/password pairs on banking, email and social sites automatically. If every account has a unique password, a leak stays a one-site problem instead of a total takeover.

Let a generator do the boring part

Humans are predictable; generators are not. Use a password generator to create a unique 16–20 character password for every account, store them in a password manager, and protect the manager itself with your one memorable passphrase plus two-factor authentication.
