Frequently Asked Questions

What is a codepoint?

A codepoint is a character’s number in the Unicode standard, written like U+1F600 for the grinning face emoji. Every character in every script has one.

Why do some characters take 4 UTF-8 bytes?

UTF-8 is variable-length: ASCII uses 1 byte, most European and Middle-Eastern scripts use 2, most Asian scripts use 3, and emoji use 4 bytes.

What are surrogate pairs?

JavaScript strings are UTF-16, so characters above U+FFFF are stored as two 16-bit units called a surrogate pair. The UTF-16 column shows both units for such characters.

Which names are shown?

Names are built in for printable ASCII characters. For other characters the tool shows the codepoint and block-style description derived from the character itself, since full Unicode name data is a large database.
