Frequently Asked Questions
Is this text to speech really free?
Yes. It uses the Web Speech API built into your browser and operating system, so there are no per-character charges, accounts or uploads. The voices available depend on your device — Windows, macOS, Android and iOS each ship their own set.
Why do I only see a few voices?
Voices come from your browser and OS, not from this site. Chrome on desktop usually offers the widest selection, including high-quality Google voices. Edge adds natural Microsoft voices. Reload the page if the list looks empty — some browsers load voices a moment after the page.
What is the rate and pitch for?
Rate controls speaking speed (0.5× is half speed, 2× is double). Pitch shifts the voice higher or lower without changing speed. Both apply the next time you press Play.
Can I download the audio as MP3?
The Web Speech API plays audio but does not provide a downloadable file, so this tool cannot export MP3s. For proofreading, articles and language practice, live playback is usually all you need.
